best deals: Use a comparison site such as salesmymobile.com to find out how much you can get for your make and model from different firms.

Check if bigger companies like Mazuma Mobile are included in the results and if not, check their website as well. You can get more by replacing a bad battery or fixing a cracked screen.

Cut out the middle man: Often your phone will be resold after you send it. Reselling yourself can increase your profits – although it is not without its risks. Research what it can cost you and search eBay for a guide to selling mobile phones. Never send it to a stranger without tracking it.

Remove all traces: However you pass your phone, make sure you erase all traces of it first. Remove any security code and reset it to factory setting. If you can’t sell or give it away, be environmentally conscious by recycling it.

Save by pasting: Most of us automatically upgrade our phones when our contract expires. But if your mobile is working properly, you can save a pack every month by sticking to your current model and switching to the SIM-only deal. Do your legwork to find out if the savings can exceed the money you’ll get for selling it.

put it away: If your phone isn’t worth much, or you can’t afford the trouble of trading it in, there are charities that will take your phone out of your hands. FoneBank is a trade-in site that lets you donate part, or all, of the proceeds to WaterAid, Oxfam or the National Trust.

Some mobile companies have projects to donate old phones to others. Check out the reconnected plan of three.
